Ras Michael

Bio

Ras Michael is a key element in the African and Reggae music from Jamaica. He worked with the likes of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, The Wailers, Burning Spear, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder and Billy Paul. He once opened for the musically talented Roberta Flack at the National Stadium in Jamaica where thousands attended the magnificent show. One of his first albums, known as Dadawa, was released in the latter part of the 1970’s. The album was such a hit made news in the highly acclaimed “Billboard Magazine.”

In the 1980’s Ras Michael received many awards included the Martin’s International Award for The Most Cultural Music Roots Band. He was also nominated for the Peter Tosh Award during his reign in the 80’s. Ras has over 14 albums to date. He was fortunate to have recorded a single entitled, “Children of the Universe”, with back up sounds of the original “Wailers”. This musical master has done work with the greatest in the Reggae music industry. While touring in Paris the legendary Rastafarian Bob Marley; Bob was asked to comment on the talent of Ras Michael as a performer and he replied, “Ras Michael is a roots master and a Niyabinghi Specialist. He tells you like it is.”

He is also featured in the British Guiness Book of World Records on Reggae music coming out of Jamaica. Ras Michael has toured the U.S. and is known worldwide, likewise is his music which is the heart of the African Rasta Roots music world. He is also known among the Reggae family of artists under the Shanachie Label. This year Ras Michael will also be involved in the creation of and set up for the Ras Michael & Sons of Negus Culture Center in Kingston, Jamaica.
